Stop most small-business fraud.

Five free habits that stop the frauds actually hitting small businesses. No software to buy. You can put every one of them in place this week.

The checklist Pete Hish shares in his fraud-prevention talks for chambers, associations, and business groups.
The checklist

Five habits. All free. Start this week.

  1. Confirm any money move by phone.

New bank details or a wire request? Call a number you already trust, not the one in the message.

  2. Two people on every wire.

Above a set dollar amount, a second person approves before it goes out.

  3. Two-step login on email and banking.

Your email is the master key. This is the highest-value hour you will spend all year.

  4. Check email forwarding rules monthly.

A rule you did not create means someone is already inside.

  5. Let your team slow down.

Urgency is the scam. A real boss and a real vendor can wait ten minutes.

If you are hit: report it the same day.

IC3.gov and your bank’s fraud line. Speed is what gets money back.
